Precious Gems of Afghanistan

Historically well known for its lapis lazuli deposits, Afghanistan's dramatic landscape, with its rocky deserts, snow-capped mountains, and fertile valleys, conceals some of Earth's most exquisite gemstones.

The Panjshir Valley in northeastern Afghanistan, 150 kilometres north of Kabul, near the Hindu Kush mountain range, is the birthplace of emeralds so vividly green and beautiful that they inspire awe and appreciation, considered some of the best the world has to offer.

The Nuristan Region of Afghanistan is home to bountiful mines of pegmatite gems, including tourmaline and spodumene (kunzite). The tourmaline, with its exceptional quality and highly sought-after colours such as mint green, ink blue, and vivid pink, is a fascinating sight. The kunzite crystals, with their remarkable size, crystal perfection, and diversity of colour, stand in a league of their own, intriguing all who behold them.

Due to Afghanistan's fraught political history and harsh mining conditions, the nation's supply of precious gemstones has been inconsistent. However, this very scarcity makes gems from this origin all the more rare and highly desirable, offering a sense of exclusivity to those who possess them.
